Saint Lucia expressed the hope that the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Hörst Kohler, could advance the process leading to a just and mutually acceptable final solution to the Sahara conflict in accordance with the relevant Council Security resolutions .

The Permanent Representative of St. Lucia to the United Nations, Mr. Cosmos Richardson, noted on Friday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, the relevance of the latest Security Council resolution 2351 issued 28 April 2017 which stresses the importance of realism and a spirit of compromise for the parties in order to make progress in the negotiations.

He also said that his country "takes note of the importance of the regional nature of the conflict and the contributions that neighboring countries can make to the political process led by the United Nations."

"In this regard, we stress that Security Council Resolution 2351 considered that enhanced cooperation between the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union would contribute to stability and security in the Sahel region," he concluded.
