Nothing seems to stop the emblematic projects of the region of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hmara even in this time of coronavirus (Covid-19).

The sites registered within the framework of the development model of the southern provinces, launched in 2015, are still ongoing while respecting health measures decreed by public authorities in order to stem the transmission of this pandemic.


This is what emerged from a meeting held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the wilaya of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, aimed at presenting the state of progress of major projects supposed to transform the region into a competitive economic pole and hub for trade between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.


Addressing elected officials and representatives of the ministerial departments and public institutions present at this meeting, the wali of the region, governor of the province of Laâyoune, Abdeslam Bekrate, considered it essential to respect the time limits allowed for the completion of the programmed projects. calling on all stakeholders to honor their financial commitments.


It was also an opportunity to tackle the problems that could delay the completion of these projects, whether in terms of land, funding or coordination between the various stakeholders.


The regional officials of the ministerial departments and public institutions affirmed that the works of these building sites are going well, in accordance with the planning of the contract-program of development of the southern provinces (2016-2012), signed in front of HM King Mohammed VI.
In terms of infrastructure, Abdellah Al-Rais, director of temporary development on national road no. 1 connecting Tiznit to Dakhla, reassured the progress of works on the various sections under the territorial jurisdiction of the region.
This big project over 1.055 km for a total cost of 10 billion dirhams, consists of the construction of Tiznit-Laâyoune expressway over a length of 555 km, in addition to the widening and strengthening of the national road n ° 1 between Laâyoune and Dakhla over a distance of 500 km.
The regional director of equipment, transport, logistics and water of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, Mohamed El Abchiri, presented the progress of the Laâyoune-Smara road axis over a length of 205.2 km. The completion rate reached 69 percent, he said.


For the Smara-Tan-Tan road axis, the completion of the three sections under the territorial jurisdiction of the province of Smara amounted to 60%, said El Abchiri.
In the health sector, construction works on the Tarfaya provincial hospital, which will be ready by the end of early 2022, reached 60% of around 32 million dirhams.
An upgrade of the Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mehdi regional hospital center is also planned for a budget of 57 MDH. According to the Regional Director of Health, the preliminary design (APS) is being validated and this project, which will be completed by 2021, will significantly improve the supply and quality of care for the benefit of population.
The medical faculty at a cost of more than 229 MDH is progressing at a steady pace.The rate of completion of this project, the foundation stone of which was laid last November, is 15% and the project will be ready in June 2022.
