Senegal reaffirmed, Friday before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, its long-standing support for the Moroccanity of the Sahara and for the autonomy initiative as a pragmatic solution to this artificial regional dispute.

"As a pragmatic solution to end the crisis, my delegation reiterates its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara region, which is based on the building of a democratic and modern society, the rule of law, individual and collective freedoms and economic and social development with respect for the sovereignty of the Kingdom," said the representative of Senegal at this meeting.

"As an international community, we must align ourselves behind the Secretary-General of the United Nations, his next personal envoy, once appointed, and the Security Council, in the process aimed at achieving a negotiated and lasting political solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, bearing in mind the inestimable potential of a final solution to this dispute, not only in terms of cooperation and development, but also with regards to the important challenges facing the region and the Sahel," the Senegalese diplomat pointed out.

Such a solution "would also make it possible to bring a solution to the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps", she added.

"We urge the parties to remain mobilized in the constructive dynamic provided by the two round tables held in Geneva so as to accompany the political process initiated by the United Nations until its conclusion," the Senegalese diplomat underlined, adding that her country reiterates its support for the UN-led process, on the basis of the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council since 2007, including resolution 2494 adopted on October 30, 2019, which underscores the need to move towards a realistic, pragmatic, lasting political solution based on compromise, for the settlement of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
