Kuwait reiterated, Friday before the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, its support for the autonomy initiative as a constructive choice to reach a solution, that is acceptable by all parties, to the artificial regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In his speech before the Committee, the representative of the State of Kuwait insisted on "the need to respect the unity and sovereignty of Morocco", recalling the unified position of the Gulf States concerning the Sahara issue "expressed during the Morocco-Gulf countries summit in Riyadh on April 20, 2016".

In this regard, the Kuwaiti diplomat expressed the wish that a solution to the question of the Moroccan Sahara can be reached "as soon as possible, in the interest of peace and regional stability", while reiterating the support of Kuwait to the efforts of the United Nations, its Secretary General and his Personal Envoy "who facilitated the holding of two round tables of the parties concerned by the Sahara issue in December 2018 and March 2019".

He also welcomed "the participation in these two round tables of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, in accordance with resolutions 2414 and 2440 of the Security Council", highlighting the positive spirit that marked these two meetings which "aim to achieve a political solution that is mutually acceptable by all the parties to the Sahara issue".

The Kuwaiti diplomat also praised the positive momentum created by these two round tables, as they constitute "the only means towards a consensual political solution", while welcoming that "the four parties to" this regional dispute have agreed to meet as part of a third round table, in accordance with Security Council resolutions.

He also underlined "the importance" for the next Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General to build on the momentum and progress made in the previous round tables and to pick up where his predecessor left off, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the consensual aspect of the resolution which will be presented for adoption by the Fourth Committee on the Moroccan Sahara issue.
