 Morocco insists it cannot tolerate modification of status quo in Tifariti buffer zone  5/30/2008

Morocco insisted that it will not accept, under any circumstances, that the status quo be modified in the Tifariti zone, which has been, since the 1991 UN-brokered ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario, free from any civil or military presence.

  


 Amnesty International concerned about impunity and restrictions in Tindouf camps   5/29/2008

Amnesty International (AI) has voiced concern about restrictions on freedom of circulation and impunity prevailing in Tindouf camps, southwestern Algeria. "For Amnesty International, the impunity of those accused of human rights abuses in the Polisario camps remains a source of main concern," AI Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa program told the Moroccan news Agency "MAP".  Speaking on the fringes of the presentation of AI 2008 report on the state of the world's human rights, Mr. Luther also cited among the violations committed in the camps cases of forced disappearances, torture and detentions in secret places.

 Walsum’s conclusions shared by UN diplomats (British press)   5/28/2008

The British monthly North-South stressed that the latest statements by the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Sahara, Mr. Peter van Walsum, saying that independence in the Sahara is not realistic, is part of a reality shared by UN diplomatic circles. "These are statements that carry a reality shared by many diplomats who could not express themselves publicly for fear of Algerian reprisals," said the release quoting UN diplomats. The monthly said that the Personal Envoy of UN Secretary-General for the Sahara had stated before the Security Council that "the independence of Western Sahara is not a realistic option,"

  


 Mexico briefed on autonomy initiative for the Sahara   5/28/2008

The Moroccan initiative to negotiate an autonomy statute in the Sahara region was explained Tuesday in Mexico City, at a conference held by Abdellahi Ahl Abdelkader, a member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs(Corcas).
