Residents of Tindouf camps forced to take military trainings (NGOs) 6/23/2008
The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants USCRI stressed that the residents of Tindouf camps are forced to attend military training before being shipped to Cuba. In its 2008 annual report, USCRI, an American NGO based in Washington, said that six former Sahrawi inmates have testified before the Belgian parliament that Polisario had forced them to undergo military training in Tindouf before being shipped to Cuba. "The Polisario has banned several people returning to the region of the Moroccan Sahara," says the NGO, adding that residents have expressed their intention to return and some of them have managed to reach Morocco through Mauritania.

Washington reaffirms its support to autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty 6/20/2008
United States President, Georges W. Bush, has confirmed that Morocco's initiative to grant substantial autonomy to its Southern Provinces -the Sahara- under the kingdom's sovereignty, is the only solution to the 32-year old dispute over the former Spanish colony, and insisted that an independent State, as claimed by the Algerian-backed separatist movement "Polisario", is not a realistic option.
