The international community must put pressure on Algeria to allow Polisario engage seriously in negotiations to achieve a final settlement to the Sahara issue and thus end the suffering of Sahrawis sequestrated in Tindouf camps said Monday in New York, Lahcen Mahraoui, member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS).

Speaking before 4th Commission of the UN General Assembly, Lahcen Mahraoui urged the community of nations to pressure the Algerian state "to authorize Polisario to engage seriously in negotiations in search of a just and mutually acceptable political solution".

This pressure is needed to end this conflict to end the human tragedy in the region, said Lahcen Mahraoui before an audience composed of Member States, NGOs, lawyers and defenders of human rights.

While Algiers continues to dictate separatists to hold the referendum option abandoned by the international community since 2003, the majority of Sahrawis, including those taken hostage in Tindouf, support the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, seeing it as "the most realistic and fair," solution he said, adding that this plan has been repeatedly described as "serious and credible" by the international community.

This project is a "win-win" solution since it will allow Sahrawis to regain their autonomy and manage their own affairs, and the countries of the region to unite to face all the challenges they face in a very unstable regional environment.

"For us, Sahrawis, said Lahcen Mahraoui it is the political solution that combines self-determination with the territorial integrity and national unity."

At the time the Kingdom offers Sahrawis the hope of a dignified and prosperous life, they continue to witness in Tindouf violation of their basic rights by separatists, including rights of expression and freedom of movement.

Lahcen Mahraoui denounced the fact that "undernutrition affects women, children and elderly people, due, in large part, to the embezzlement of international aid by officials of the Polisario and their Algerian accomplices", citing the latest report in this regard by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), which reflects the extent of these embezzlements.

The control of this aid is rendered almost impossible by the Algerian State, despite repeated calls from the UN Security Council, to identify and register these populations, warned Lahcen Mahraoui.

Corcas member questioned how these populations can also be considered for 40 years as "refugees" without holding refugee rights or refugee cards.

In this respect, Lahcen Mahraoui urged the Algerian government to assume its responsibilities instead of continuing to exploit those rights for political purposes.
