Granting autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty to the southern provinces can accelerate pace of socio-economic development of the region, said Saturday in Laayoune, MEP Gilles Pargneaux, chairman of the EU-Morocco friendship group.

Mr. Pargneaux, who led this delegation visiting Morocco from June 2 to 6, said in a press statement that the delegation has noted with satisfaction the positive development experienced by the southern provinces in the economic, social and human rights levels, stating that these provinces witnessed qualitative leap in the areas of agriculture, marine fisheries and renewable energy. 

He expressed the admiration of the EU delegation regarding urban development and major development projects in the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, advising that these projects are an opportunity for wealth creation, economic integration and work opportunities.

In connection with the situation of human rights in the region, MEP said the EU delegation welcomes the positive role of the Regional Commission for Human Rights (HRDC) in Laayoune, Smara in defense and protection of human rights, noting that the delegation notes that this committee fulfills important roles and acts independently.

Civil society in the Southern provinces plays an extremely important role in democratic debate, he added, adding that the delegation he leads has held several meetings with associations and found they were acting and expressed their opinions peacefully, as commonly used worldwide.

The European parliamentary delegation had several meetings with the President of the HRDC, chairman of the council of the city of Laayoune, actors of civil society and Wali of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region Yahdih Bouchab.
