EU representative: we take positive note of Morocco's request to rejoin the AU

The European Union (EU) reiterated on Monday at the UN, its "total support" to the process initiated under the aegis of the United Nations to reach a political settlement of the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, while supporting request by the Security Council to make census of the populations in Tindouf camps.

"We reaffirm our full support for UN efforts to reach a mutually acceptable and lasting political solution" to the Sahara dispute, said EU representative before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly.

He added, in this regard, that "we take note of efforts and developments since 2006 to ensure the implementation of Security Council resolutions" on this issue.

The representative of the European Union said "we encourage the parties and neighboring States to cooperate with the United Nations to advance the political process, show political will and work in an atmosphere propitious for dialogue in order to begin more intense negotiations in good faith and without preconditions. "

He, moreover, pointed out that the Union "supports the request by the Security Council that the High Commissioner for Refugees maintains the examination of a census" of populations in Tindouf camps.

The EU representative, speaking also on behalf of candidates of the bloc countries, including Turkey, also said that "we take positive note of Morocco's request to rejoin the African Union."
