 Industry

usine2.jpgThe towns of Boujdour and Tarfaya are less industrialized than Laayoune, the region's pole, and its neighbouring areas. This industrial superiority of Laayoune is attributed above all to the infrastructure of its port, equipped with an industrial zone very much linked to fishing and export activities. Likewise, this industrial development is the result of the encouragement extended by the central, local authorities and the competent services. The state given by the government has allowed the creation of 18 industrial units, made up of plants for fish and molluscs freezing, ice industry, canning, and fish flour and oil. The municipality of Laayoune Port hosts more than ten big industrial plants, most of which specialized in the production of fish flour and oil. This centre has proven its eminent role as an economic pole attracting industrial investments for the whole region, as it hosts most industrial units working in fish processing and phosphate and sand export, as well as petroleum products depots.

Except for some fish processing plants and some depots (sand, phosphate and petroleum products), the region is far from being an industrial area par excellence, because of the absence of other industrial activities, such as metallurgy, parachemistry, mechanics, textile, etc.

In terms of employment, the industrial sector provides work for more than 2991 people, generally centred in Laayoune. This number is a bit small, compared to the total number of workers in this sector.
