Thousands of Moroccans living in Spain and Europe on Sunday took to the street in Granada to voice support for Morocco's initiative to grant autonomy to its southern provinces (the Sahara).

Many Spaniards and Arab students in Spain also joined the demonstration, which took place in a public square before the Congress Palace in Granada.

Folklore bands and artists took part in this demonstration, creating a lively atmosphere.

Brandishing Moroccan flags and chanting slogans reaffirming Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, demonstrators voiced their support to Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

Many representatives of the Moroccan associations in Europe told MAP that this demonstration is meant to denounce the human rights abuses committed by the Polisario against the Moroccans held against their will in Tindouf camps, southwestern Algeria.

The demonstrators welcomed the first Morocco-EU summit, held in Granada on March 6-7, in which the EU commended the progress and reforms undertaken by the Kingdom in all fields.

They also commended the Advanced Status granted to Morocco in October 2008, adding that it is a "recognition" of the progress made by Morocco in political, economic and social fields.
