The political stand of the polisario regarding the Sahara issue should evolve following the example of Morocco, which has proposed "substantial autonomy" as a solution to this issue, Spokesman of the conservative Popular Party (PP) in the Spanish Parliament's Foreign Affairs Commission underlined Tuesday.

"The Polisario should understand that it should develop its political stand like Morocco which has proposed a perfectly workable substantial autonomy to its Sahara," Gustavo de Aristegui told MAP, following the presentation of "the Sahara: Social Bonds and Geopolitical Issues," a book by Moroccan sociologist, Mohamed Cherkaoui.

"We believe that the Polisario should develop its current position, which calls for a total independence without any concession, into a position that is realistic and not utopian," he said.

The politician called on the parties to the Sahara issue, who share the same challenges and problems, to “build a new future based on harmony.”

He also welcomed the "major" and "praiseworthy" progress made by Morocco in the field of politics, society and individual liberties.

On Cherkaoui’s book, de Aristegui said it explains in a “scientific way” several points of the issue that are not very well understood in Europe, especially those pertaining to the sociological fragmentation in the Sahara and to the geo-strategic importance of this region at the regional and international levels.
