Morocco's initiative to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, is the most pertinent and the most appropriate solution to the Sahara dispute, Mayor of the Italian city of Sorrento, Emilio Moretti, said on Saturday.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the twining ceremony between the southern city of Laayoune and Sorrento, Moretti said "autonomy is the most pertinent and the most appropriate solution to the Sahara dispute."

The Italian official hailed the development witnessed in Morocco's southern provinces, especially in the field of urban planning.

The twining between the two cities aims to reinforce cooperation relations and exchange in the social, cultural and scientific fields and promote the values of peace, friendship, understanding and dialog between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
