An international NGO denounced the instrumentalization by Algeria of the Sahara conflict to serve its strategic interests, urging the UN Security Council to stop human rights violations in Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria).

"We strongly request the UN Security Council to make themselves a free, current and independent picture of the situation in Tindouf and to urgently stop the human rights violations with the appropriate means as well as to forcefully appeal to the political decision-makers," the Austria Morocco Institute said in a report to the UNSC.

The NGO, which strives to foster ties between Europe and north Africa, condemned the inhumane living conditions of the Sahrawi people in Tindouf which are being worsened by the criminal actions of the polisario.

It also voiced great concern over the stagnation and continuous procrastination in solving the Sahara issue and regarding the decision-making processes which have lasted for decades.

In Austria, "the propaganda machinery of the polisario works hand in hand with the Algerian embassy to spark a fire of hostility", the NGO deplored.

It condemned the embezzlement by the polisario leaders of international aid sent for populations held captive in the camps, recalling Algeria's refusal to let the UNHCR conduct a headcount of these populations that are denied free movement and free speech.

Having interviewed Sahrawis who have escaped the camps, the NGO said that populations sequestered in Tindouf are yearning for returning to the motherland.
