Morocco's autonomy proposal for its Southern provinces, the Sahara, is a "new platform for discussions", former US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Welch said here Thursday.

Morocco's autonomy proposal is "a new chance to take a fresh look at the Sahara issue", he told MAP, on the sidelines of a meeting held by the Washington-based think tank "Middle East Institute."

While stressing the progress this proposal "made for opening the doors for  better and stronger negotiations," the former official voiced hope that the "Kingdom will not give up hope to see this process move forward."

"It is important and worthwhile that Morocco has chosen to lead in that matter," he added.

Welch deemed "unrealistic" and outdated the referendum, saying that "self-determination does not happen in the same way in all the places and that it needs a local translation."
