Participants in a demonstration, held Tuesday in the French city of Strasbourg, handed European MPs an appeal for setting free the population held against their will in Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria).
The call, which highlights aspects of the unbearable treatment endured by the forcibly detained population in the Polisario-run camps in the Algerian territory, was submitted by a delegation representing the demonstrators who took part in a protest staged in front of the Headquarters of the European Parliament.
Their aim was to draw the attention of the European public opinion on the degrading treatment inflicted on the families in the camps and to urge European MPs for an urgent intervention with a view of putting an end to this suffering.
"It is high time to shed light on what is really taking place in the camps where the Sahrawi population are imprisoned by a violent and dangerous oligarchy of dealers who are incapable of reasoning and following the path of peace," the protesters said in the appeal.
Separatism advocates continue to stick to obsolete ideas and are incapable of bringing answers as generous as Morocco's initiative to grant a large autonomy to its southern provinces, which enjoys the endorsement of the international community, the demonstrators said.
The protesters against the human rights breaches in the camps made it clear that the Sahara is an integral part of Morocco given its geography, history, culture and religion in addition to the centuries-old allegiance biding the Sahrawis to the Allaouite throne.
Hundreds of participants took part in the protest held at the initiative of the Sahrawi Association for the support of the Autonomy project (ASSPA).
