Morocco's autonomy plan, which is supported by the international community, is the "only realistic path" to end the conflict over the Sahara, US daily New York Times reported on Friday.

"Morocco has offered the region (the Sahara) autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, which is supported by the international community," Moroccan ambassador in Washington Aziz Mekouar told the paper, noting that "this compromise is the only realistic path to achieving a lasting solution for the region."

Recalling Morocco's tremendous investments to achieve sustainable development in the Kingdom's southern provinces (the Sahara), Mekouar underscored that the autonomy project offers hope for the population held against its will in the Polisario-run Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria).

He also deplored the fact that this population is denied free movement and the right to join their families in Morocco.
